The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has announced a new display brightness certification tier called DisplayHDR True Black 1400. Samsung Display could soon unveil a desktop-grade OLED panel that meets this new certification.
The DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification is designed for next-generation OLED panels that can reach peak brightness of up to 1,400cd/m² (nits) while maintaining black levels as low as 0.0005cd/m². VESA has also raised the required sustained full-screen brightness to 700 nits for OLED panels seeking this certification. Both the peak and sustained brightness requirements are significant improvements over the existing DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification.
VESA says the new certification is based on the enhanced testing framework introduced with DisplayHDR CTS 1.2. It features a more rigorous testing process and technical requirements, making it more difficult for display makers to manipulate results or cut corners.
The first products certified under the DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard will be showcased at the Bilibili World 2026 event in Shanghai, which runs from July 10 to July 12, 2026. Lenovo has already announced that its Yoga Pro 16 will be the first notebook to receive this certification, and it could use an OLED panel from Samsung Display.
Samsung Display is also expected to unveil a tandem OLED panel with DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification soon. That panel could eventually make its way into more products, including devices from Samsung Electronics.
